Spring is here, and so are the ticks! Adult ticks become active when the daytime temperature gets above 40-45 degrees, and after a long winter in dormancy, they are hungry!
In 2017, the latest data available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) counted more than 42,000 cases of reported Lyme disease. Of those, over 90 percent were reported from 12 states: Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. According to the CDC, Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne illness in the U.S.
Ticks live in wooded, bushy areas that provide food and cover for small animals and deer. Ticks are unable to jump or fly and usually attach to a host at ground level. They crawl onto animals or people as they brush against vegetation and will attach to the host for a blood meal. Tick exposure is greatest in wooded areas, especially along trails and fringe areas.
Upon returning home from a walk through the woods, time in the garden or camping, it’s important to perform a thorough tick check from head to toe. If you find a tick on your body, remove it with a slow, steady pull so as not to break off the mouth-parts and leave them in the skin. Then wash hands and bite site thoroughly with soap and water. Flush ticks down the toilet or wrap them tightly in tissue before disposing of in a closed receptacle. If you suspect a tick bite, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Still having a problem with ticks? Be Green Pro can help! Our All-Natural Insect Management Service is a chemical-free, long-lasting essential oil-based treatment, which successfully manages Ticks, Mosquitoes, Chiggers, Fleas, and other nuisance insects - but will not harm beneficial insects such as Honey Bees, Butterflies, and Earthworms.
The essential oil blend targets specific insects to deplete moisture or air which prevents survival. Our pest control service offers multiple measures of effectiveness on the impact of application, as well as a lasting residual product and a fragrance which is pleasing for most people but deters susceptible species with a warning odor to keep away.
