We've added our advice to create 4 simple steps to keep lettuce “green” and save you “green” too! 

Step 1: Rinse & Revive

Cold Water Soak: Fill a bowl with frigid cold water. Submerge your cut lettuce leaves in the water and sit for about 30 minutes. This initial step helps revive the leaves and remove residual dirt, ensuring your greens are as clean and healthy as possible. Ensure all leaves are thoroughly clean before proceeding to the next step.

Additional Lettuce Cleaning Tips:

  • Remove any damaged or wilted outer leaves.
  • Gently swish the leaves around to loosen any dirt or debris.
  • Let the lettuce sit in the water after swishing to allow sediment to settle.
  • Remove lettuce from the bowl and rinse each leaf under running cold water.
  • Check for any remaining dirt or insects and rewash if necessary.

Step 2: Dry Thoroughly

Salad Spinner: After soaking, gently lift the lettuce out of the water and spin off excess moisture with a salad spinner. This is crucial in preventing mold or mildew from forming during storage, keeping your lettuce crisp and safe to eat.

Paper Towels: Lay the lettuce leaves on a towel and gently pat them dry. You can also roll the lettuce in the towel and gently squeeze it to remove moisture, but you must be careful to ensure that the lettuce leaves do not break apart. 

Air Dry: Spread the lettuce leaves in a single layer on a clean surface (baking sheet or countertop) and let them air dry. This method takes the longest, but it can be convenient if you have other kitchen chores to do while the lettuce dries. 

Additional Lettuce Drying Tips:

  • Before using any method, gently shake the lettuce to remove as much water as possible.
  • Placing the washed lettuce leaves in a colander and gently shaking them is a great way to get started before any method. 
  • If using a towel or air drying, ensure the lettuce leaves are spread out to allow for better airflow.
  • When using a towel, gently blot the lettuce instead of rubbing, as rubbing can damage the leaves.
  • Air drying can take up to 30 minutes or more depending on the amount of lettuce and humidity, so plan accordingly.

Step 3: Wrap For Freshness

Wrap In A Cotton Towel: After thoroughly washing and drying your lettuce, the key to keeping it crisp and fresh lies in removing excess moisture. This is where a simple kitchen towel comes in handy. Spread your lettuce leaves in a single layer on a clean cotton towel (avoid terry cloth) and loosely wrap them. The cotton towel, such as a dish towel, is vital as it absorbs any remaining moisture while allowing the lettuce to breathe, which helps maintain its freshness.

  • Spread a clean, dry kitchen towel (preferably linen or cotton) on a flat surface.
  • Gently place the washed lettuce leaves on the towel in a single layer, avoiding overlap as much as possible.
  • Carefully roll the towel with the lettuce inside, forming a loose cylinder. Avoid squeezing or pressing too tightly, as this can damage the delicate leaves.
  • Gently pat the rolled-up towel to absorb any excess moisture from the lettuce. You may want to repeat this step a few times, unrolling and re-rolling the towel to ensure even drying.
  • Be sure to mind the humidity of the room where the rolled lettuce is kept, as high humidity can make it much more difficult for the lettuce to dry. 

Step 4: Store & Chill

Sustainable Storage: Place your wrapped lettuce in a reusable container, such as a glass or BPA-free plastic container with a lid, or in a reusable silicone bag. These sustainable options help reduce plastic waste while keeping your lettuce fresh.

Refrigerator Storage: Store the container in your refrigerator's crisper drawer. This environment is ideal for keeping the lettuce cool and crisp, just the way it should be.

Additional Lettuce Storage Tips:

  • The crisper drawer is specifically designed to keep produce fresh. Adjust the drawer vent for vegetables to prevent lettuce from drying out too much.
  • If the paper towels become damp, replace them with fresh ones to prevent the lettuce from becoming soggy.
  • Avoid overfilling the container, as this can crush delicate leaves and restrict airflow. Leave some space for the lettuce to breathe.
  • Ethylene gas released by fruits like apples and bananas can accelerate the ripening and spoilage of lettuce. Keep them separate in the fridge.
  • While these tips can extend the life of lettuce, it's still best to use it within 1-3 weeks maximum for optimal freshness and flavor.
